Ecobank Malawi Limited says it is planning to expand its presence in the country while offering world class banking services.

The bank’s managing director, Charles Asiedu, made the remarks in Lilongwe on Friday when the bank opened its new branch at Old Town, the eighth since it started its operations in Malawi seven years ago.

He said the pan-African bank further acknowledges the role of internet and technology in modern banking systems and pledged to be innovative in bringing the same to customers.

“We are not just establishing new branches. We will continue to avail world class services with our tried and trusted products in all our banking halls and through internet,” he said.

Ecobank commenced operations in Malawi in 2008 after acquiring stake in Loita Bank and Aseidu further pledged the bank would soon open branches in other urban centres as part of a three-year growth plan.

“We belong to a banking group which is the biggest in sub-Saharan Africa outside South Africa with a balance sheet of over $23 billion and over 1 200 branches across the platform. We operate as a local bank in each country and our objective is to build world class Pan African bank and contribute to the economic and financial development of Africa,” said Asiedu.

Officially commissioning the centre, deputy governor of Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Naomi Ngwira said the central bank is pleased with the growth of the banking sector.

She said financial inclusion is vital for economic and financial growth of the nation and citizenry.
